Tree Roots in Sewer Lines: Why Houston Yards Are Full of Them
Roots do not break sewer pipes. That is the first thing to understand, because every spring somebody in Houston gets sold a replacement on the theory that the live oak did it. Roots find a pipe that is already leaking. What put the opening there is the ground, and what fixes it is the joint, not the tree.
How a root gets in
A root tip grows toward moisture and nutrients. A sewer lateral leaking at a separated joint is a steady source of both, warm, all year round. The root follows the wet soil to the gap, pushes a hair-thin tip through it, and then does what roots do — thickens. Over a few seasons the hair becomes a rope, the rope becomes a mass, and the mass catches every piece of paper that goes past. The joint gets levered a little wider each year.
So the question is never "which tree" so much as "which joint." On the camera, tree roots in sewer line Houston laterals show up at the same places every time: a coupling the clay has pulled apart, a cast iron hub that cracked when the slab moved, a place where a sprinkler contractor nicked the pipe in 1998.
Why Houston has more open joints than most cities
Harris County sits on gumbo clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. A wet spring followed by a dry August moves the soil enough to shift a pipe laid in it. The 1970s–90s subdivisions from Katy to Pearland to Kingwood got PVC or ABS laterals laid straight in the clay with no sand bedding, and forty years of shrink-swell has racked the glued joints apart an inch or two. Older neighborhoods — Oak Forest, Garden Oaks, Meyerland, Bellaire — have cast iron that cracked at the hubs for the same reason, and a few streets still have vitrified clay tile with a joint every two or three feet.
A lateral that is only 2–5 feet down, as most of Houston's are, sits squarely in the root zone. In colder cities the pipe is buried below frost, 6 to 8 feet, and roots have farther to go.

Distance matters less than people think. A live oak's feeder roots reach two to three times the width of the canopy. The tree on the neighbor's side of the fence is a candidate.
What the symptoms look like
Slow drains that get slower through the summer and fall, then a backup, then a cable clears it and it is fine until next year. That yearly rhythm is roots. The cable cuts through the mass, the mass grows back from the joint, and the cycle repeats. Each pass also wears the pipe a little more. If a line has been snaked for roots more than twice, the joint has gotten worse each time, and the next call should be a camera inspection.
Fixing it for good
Clearing is not fixing. A cable or a hydro jet removes the roots. A jet does it better — 3,000–4,000 psi water scours the pipe wall clean instead of boring a hole through the mass — and it is $350–$900. But roots come back from a joint that is still open.
The fix is the joint.
- One separated joint, sound pipe on both sides: a spot repair, $1,500–$3,000, one day, and the roots have no way back in.
- Several bad joints, or roots along the whole run: a replacement in schedule 40 PVC with solvent-welded joints and sand bedding, $4,000–$12,000. Roots cannot enter a properly glued PVC joint.
- The run is under the tree you want to keep, or under a driveway: a cured-in-place liner, $6,000–$12,000. It has no joints at all, and it does not disturb the roots.
What does not fix it: copper sulfate crystals down the toilet (they kill the root tips in the pipe and nothing else, and the City of Houston would rather they not go into the treatment plant), foaming root killers (same, slower), and cutting the tree down (the joint is still open and the next tree's roots or the neighbor's will find it).
Planting with the line in mind
If you are adding a tree, find the lateral first. The camera's locator maps it in fifteen minutes, or Texas811 will mark the utility side. Keep the big water-seekers — willow, sycamore, water oak, tallow — at least 30 feet off the line, and keep anything with an aggressive root system off the lateral's path across the front yard. A crepe myrtle over the cleanout is fine. A live oak over the lateral is a lining job in twenty years.
